APPLES in WINTER
AUDIENCE REVIEWS - EDINBURGH FRINGE
sarah kilpatrick: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The stand out 5 star show for me this year. We were gripped from start to finish and were left thoughtful, with lots to discuss. And now we know how to make a decent apple pie - and the cling film demonstrations were impressive. I will look out for this theatre company in future.

Beautiful, amazing. Impeccable acting, moving story
10/10
The apple pie smelt incredible. Thank you for a fabulous hour
Connor:
Absolutely outstanding. I’ve been coming to the Fringe for years and have seen hundreds of shows, but Apples in Winter is without question one the best plays I’ve ever seen at Ed Fringe. Edie Campbell's solo performance was superb, the script was exceptional, and the whole show was completely gripping from start to finish. A genuinely unforgettable and moving piece of theatre - highly recommended. 10/10
Peter:
Brilliant play performed by an amazing actor. A must see!
DN:
A rare opportunity to see such impeccable acting. Take it! You won’t regret it
Dimis Michaelides:
Powerful. Jennifer Fawcett has written a chef d'oeuvre. Claire Parker's masterful direction has given it life in a minimalist setting. Edie Campbell's interpretation is a tour de force. Mum is confronting a hard, horrible reality as she makes and bakes what will be her last apple pie. Put together, very powerful indeed. Truly, a must see.
William Metcalfe:
Very good, totally convincing performance. Recommended without hesitation.
David Mace:
This was an extraordinary piece of theatre, acted by an extra ordinary woman. The play was real, tender and sad. It is a must while you are in Edinburgh.
This is an extraordinary piece of Theatre acted by an exceptional individual who conveys the essence of motherhood. The play is real, tender and sad and you will be left holding a moment in time that noone wants to experience, but is beautiful at the same time.
Martin Lloyd-Elliott:
From the outset, we know we are in the presence of an actor who really knows what she is doing. Edie powerfully takes possession of the space, every gesture, facial movement, change of mood, intensity of setting, coursing through her and into us. Heart stopping, heart breaking, brilliant.
Jon Smith:
In Jennifer Fawcett's monologue Apples in Winter, Miriam bakes an apple pie for her son's last meal on death row. In an impressive performance by Edie Campbell, Miriam covers a range of subjects including the baking process, her son's life and her love for him, before eventually acknowledging his drug dependency that led to the crime for which he was convicted. It was perhaps the most moving of the many monologues I saw at the Fringe this year.
S E Hickson:
Brilliant show. Hard watch but can’t recommend it enough. Such a different idea and the acting was wonderful.
Don’t miss
Sue Jameson:
Excruciatingly Brilliant. This is the sort of show that can make people better people. National theatre standard. We marvelled at the writing, the circumstances, the feeling, the acting, the staging and everything. If I’d seen all 4000 shows, this would be in my top 20. Highly recommended.

Powerful! Touched by the love of a mother
Terrance Marshman-Edwards:
Simply one of the strongest performances I saw this Fringe, Edie Campbell gives an absolute tour de force as Miriam in Apples In Winter, thanks in part to a superb script by Jennifer Fawcett. As the clock ticks by, and Miriam bakes an apple pie from scratch, the story gets revealed slowly and we experience Miriam's full range of emotions: fear, love, anger, guilt. A quite brilliant and powerful piece of work.
Sarah Lewis:
This is so powerful and such an emotive performance. The script and delivery capture so much of the internal conflict, love, loyalty, anger and lived experience of those caught in the collateral of addiction and crime. This show will stay with me. Thank you.
David Bloomfield: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
While her words are largely delivered with a soft American accent as she prepares an apple pie for her beloved son, Edie Campbell’s facial expressions are a feast of emotions: pain, determination, sadness, contentment, longing, and anger. This is a deeply felt depiction of hurt, superbly written and performed.
Douglas O’Brien:
Just saw this, what a performance. Outstanding.
Gary Forrest:
A wonderful acting performance and an interesting story. I highly recommend you see it.
PieEnjoyer1:
A performance that blew me away. Most of my shows this fringe were comedies, so I'm thrilled to have seen this and experienced the power of theatre. And to think it's a one-woman show... I could have listened to her talk for hours.
Raquel S: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a deeply moving performance and the echo of it will stay with me. Brilliant.
Miranda Hammick:
This was one of the most moving shows I’ve seen in 10 visits to The Fringe! The actor deftly prepares an apple pie for her son’s final meal while recounting the events of his life. She reveals the intensity of her feelings for him and her anxiety and guilt that she may be responsible. Brilliant in every way!
Philippa Casares:
Edie Campbell holds the audience in the palm of her hand and takes them with her on this emotionally intense journey of grief and guilt. It is a beautifully crafted play, perfectly performed. I was moved to tears. Do go and see this.
David Howard:
It was a powerful, moving and thought provoking one woman play. Brilliantly acted, whilst baking an apple pie from scratch on stage. There is a lot of silliness and comedy on the Fringe, see this as an antidote to that. It was the best thing I saw on the Fringe (We saw 29 shows). It is honest, raw and pulls no punches - excellent writing. Go see it!

A really excellent, thoughtful play, brilliantly performed. Catch it if you can!
Jacqueline Wheble:
Powerfully acted, well crafted script and a great venue.
Jeff B:
I just saw this, today. I read the summary and thought - nothing in common with my life story- except I’m a parent. Also, I tend to be nervous about one person shows as they can be hit or miss. This was a real hit. I sat in the second row which was a good choice. What a powerful, powerful story and incredibly well performed! I know that months from now when I look back at my week at the Fringe this play will come right to mind as one of the obvious reasons I was glad to have come to the Fringe. I can’t recommend it enough.
Shena Wardrope:
Outstanding, very powerful amazing performance
Hāmiora J:
This is one of my favourite shows of the fringe. Excellent pacing and delivery. A show that slowly reveals. Strong script. It’s tough material but toes the line really well. A show to see really good acting and storytelling.
Phil Ellis:
Sharply written and observed and brilliantly delivered piece. Highly recommended

Thought the show was great! The character was portrayed perfectly. You could feel the hurt, anger and love which she was experiencing. Would recommend this to anyone who is going to the fringe and has an interest in theatre.
Sally Blower:
Fantastic piece of writing, beautifully & thoughtfully performed. Highly recommend.
Gay Hogg:
The show was outstanding. Very powerful dealing with delicate subjects in an honest and heartfelt performance. Eadie as Mirim was amazing bringing so much emotion and connections.
I highly recommend this show.
Betsy R:
The unconditional love of a mother...most of the time. Beautifully acted and powerful. Go see it! One of my top shows so far!
Ruth Velenski:
Fantastic powerful engaging one woman show highly recommended.
Gillian Robertson: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was such a powerful and emotional show! Such depth, so much that touches our lives and experiences. Edie’s performance was amazing, she held us all beautifully. Tech was just perfect! Highly recommend
Macew:
An outstanding piece of theatre!
The story begins with what seems like normal day in the kitchen, but then slowly draws you into the plot, bit by bit. Testimony to an excellent piece of writing.
Towards the end, I thought I was imagining things as I could smell a freshly baked Apple Pie, but was informed that there was indeed a freshly baked one!
Perhaps the play could end on a positive note as the mother hands out slices of the pie to the audience, who could then close their eyes as they enjoy the pie and keep the memory of her son alive :-)
Julian Beressi:
Excellent one person performance which captivates you from the start
A definite hit
Linn:
An absolutely beautiful story of a mother making her son an apple pie as a part of his last meal. She reminisces of his childhood and the event that changed everything. A beautiful one woman play about a mother’s love and grief. Go and see it! (The best way to start the day is with crying)
Candice D'Silva: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely gorgeous play about a woman with her son on Death Row. Stunning script and acting that really used its pauses in exactly the right way. The acting and script were top notch. Not a dry eye on the house.
Jake Ratcliff: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
An emotional one woman show about a mother who bakes her son an apple pie for his final meal on Death Row. A bit longer than it needed to be, doesn't ramp up momentum until the end but amazingly written and acted.
